Ada apa dengan Anjung Kimia?

Berkat kesabaran antara kita menelek, memerhati dan meluangkan masa, Anjung Kimia jabatan semakin ceria dan bertambah serinya dari semasa ke semasa. Semalam, anjung kimia dikejutkan dengan lawatan tidak terancang daripada Dato' NC yang sedang mengikuti program berbasikal bersama pelajar di sekitar UTM. Tampak Dato' Zaini berpuas hati dengan usaha tersendiri Jabatan dalam menyumbang kepada kelestarian kampus. Dr. Razali telah menyambut kedatangan Dato' NC dan rombongan. Apa isi perbincangan  mereka? Sila tanyakan Dr. Raz :)   

Bertambah menariknya, pada hari ini ternampak seolah-olah seorang pensyarah yang tidak dikenali (dari Bahagian landskap FAB barangkali) sedang mengendalikan kuliah lapangan dengan menjadikan pokok dan tumbuhan sekitar anjung sebagai kajian kes dan contoh. Apabila diperhatikan, pelajar-pelajar tersebut sedang mempelajari pelbagai jenis dan corak pokok serta tumbuhan yang ditanam di sekitar anjung. Ianya cukup menarik kerana membuktikan anjung kita telah mula terkenal dan menempa nama :) Namun, menjadi satu cabaran pula kepada tenaga sukarelawan jabatan untuk terus meningkatkan keterserlahan anjung dan mencipta potensi nilai yang tinggi (apakah?).

Pergola Ideas for Chemistry Garden

From our earlier post on Chemistry garden, you notice that a pergola is being erected along the walkway to give some shades for students walking along it. So, I have decided to post a few examples of plants on pergolas before deciding on the kind of finished pergola (between C18 and C19) that we would like to see established between block C18 and C19.

Chemistry garden in the making...I will try to upload the progress of this work inshaAllah. To start with, today is 14 Dec 2010 and this is the stage of the work been done so far. Looks very intricate, with an attached pool, not sure what is the pool for, for swimming or for fish? Well we will have to wait for the answer from our manager...Dr Razali and the gang. So far so good, there is also a pergola across the walkway, I wonder what are we going to dress it with? Kesidang? Fruiting plants? etc....ideas are very much welcomed, I suppose.

Vallaris glabra

It has been a while since I last posted anything on garden materials. So here is one to excite your senses. Vallaris glabra or better known as kerak nasi or kesidang is thought to be originated from Java, and has beautiful bunch of white flowers with very strong pandan smell. It really smells wonderful. Some kampong folks called it "bunga setokin"....haha..very strange, does it really look like one? I guess you have to be very creative to imagine this one. It blooms in the morning, spreading its refreshing pandan smell all around it and becoming more intense during the night. We once had an argument about this smell thing in bilik aktiviti and concluded that it may be due to the volatiles (which is responsible for the fragrance) being temperature dependent. Logical?

Lighten up your mind

Dr. Bakri's effort to update us on the essence of Balance Score Card in his previous post does help us a bit in today's workshop. However, there were still some murmurs heard such as..hei what is CPA?, SIP? even more torturing, the coming of the new term means the repeat of the CRR etc..haha...feeling like you want to have an early retirement? Not once but many times I supposed. What more when Puan Hanim started to present her voluminous amount of carefully thought out formula for making her life easier, it really did scare us even more!!!sorry Hanim. Just joking..you have helped us a lot last semester in trying so much to make us understand what it was all about..I mean the CRR and the lot. I suppose we couldn't complaint much, in fact I think it is going to be more interesting by each semester. And don't be surprised, Puan Khaida said she is fully equipped to face the new semester! Semuanya berbekalkan Puan Hanim's hard work. We must salute Puan Hanim for her endless passion for teaching and learning and of course the others too who are directly or indirectly involved and in trying your very best to mould and influence us all. I think we all had a fruitful day today and thanks to the Faculty for sponsoring the food.

My purpose of writing is to lighten up your mind a little bit (I hope!) with some floral pictures taken during my recent trip to a Floral Park in Orleans, France...imagine they are sweet smelling too, especially the white one. Sorry that the pictures come first before the writings. Have a good day tomorrow inshaAllah...

Anggur di Malaysia

Saya teruja melihat ladang anggur di Sik, Kedah. Tak sangka anggur boleh ditanam di Malaysia walaupun cuaca di Malaysia agak panas. Dengan menggunakan teknologi terkini serta pengurusan yang teliti, pokok anggur dapat mengeluarkan buah yang manis dan berkualiti. Jabatan Pertanian Perlis merupakan perintis penanaman anggur di Malaysia. Tidak hairanlah kebanyakkan orang Perlis dan Kedah menanam anggur di sebelah rumah mereka dan secara tidak langsung menambah pendapatan keluarga hasil dari jualan buah anggur. Antara varieti Anggur adalah seperti New White Malaga, Green Perliet, Black Opal ,I.A.C, Kyoho dan Isabela. Saya ada membawa balik batang pokok anggur untuk ditanam, tetapi tangan panas sangat, pokok anggur tak boleh hidup atau mungkin tanah di Johor tidak sesuai untuk penanaman anggur. Kepada yang berminat untuk melihat sendiri ladang anggur, bolehlah berkunjung ke Ladang Anggur Tasik Beris, Sik, Kedah.

Ulam Bukan Sembarangan Ulam

Gambar ini dihantar oleh WAWI kepada saya untuk dimasukkan ke dalam blog. Jadi sudah pastilah ianya ditanam di belakang rumahnya. Hai, kenapa pulak ada si cili padi di celah2 rimbunan herba tu? Hmmm...pengurusan tanaman bagaimana ya? Ada pulak yang masih di dalam plastik beg hitam, cuma tak pasti siapa empunya badan. Herba, cili atau....? Yang pasti katanya daunnya sangat sedap dibuat ulam. Saya rasa macam pernah tanam pokok ini suatu ketika dahulu tapi dah extinct, ulat juga suka rupanya.

Saya kurang pasti nama pokok herba ini dan tuan punya pokok pun tak tahu juga. Cari punya cari, rasanya pokok herba ini namanya pokok "Sambung Nyawa". Kalau saya salah tolong perbetulkan. Pokok ini dikatakan boleh mengubat banyak penyakit antaranya, menurunkan kolesterol, darah tinggi, meredakan sembelit, kencing manis, dan masalah buah pinggang (linaherbs.blogspot.com).

Nama lain: Googolipid, Mollucan spinach, Akar sebiak, seribu dinar. Family: Asteraceae.

Hah, apa lagi jom ke belakang rumah WAWI!...

What is white and smells so good?

Another tricky one! There are million things that may be white and smells good isn't it? White cempaka, white kemuning, white roses and white kemboja and the list goes on..But you have to believe me, this one really smells good. This plant was given to me by a good friend and will always be looking forward for it to bloom. The white flower looks so elegant on its sturdy proud green flower base. You can see the other buds ready to open up and share with us its lovely fragrance. I love to collect plants from friends and relatives and I will cherish it as a token of friendship. Some survived a long time, while others wilt away. Is that what friendship is all about? I wonder....

Friends add colours to our lives, some gives good influence while others torture you endlessly. White orchid may be white and has no smell and yet people like it. Some white flower is not even pretty and yet we love it for its good smell. For whatever reason we choose them, they are all white. It is how we want to perceive it. The same thing goes with people. Get what I mean? ha.ha...or have I confused you? What I am trying to say is that try to see people from their good side because we too would like to be perceived in the same way. Easier said than done?..well may be..but its worth trying.
This plant is known as HEDYCHIUM CORONARIUM or better known as Butterfly Ginger taking after the shape of the flower that resembles butterflies. Hedychium coronarium is a ginger family and the most fragrant of all. It is popular in Hawaii and the Pacific Islands and makes a good cut flower for scenting the home. I usually put some in a bowl of water and place it on my dining table. It is a tough plant, grows well in containers, but will quickly grow out of the container and will need to be divided every now and then. After the flowers have faded, cut the old stems as this will encourage new growth.

Ruellia macosperma dwarf

In my earlier article entitled "

Hijau dan Ungu", this flower was posted as a close shot and I remember someone asking, "Wow, so beautiful, what flower is this? Yet, this same flower is propagating uncontrollably in her own lovely garden. The difference? One is a close shot and looks rather extraordinary and now I am posting the bigger version of the whole plant which makes it more recognisable. It still looks great though. At that time I didn't know it's name yet. Now I know what it is. It is known as Ruellia macosperma dwarf. I cannot explain the dwarf part, good enough to know the name I suppose. It is usually planted as a surface coverage, quite short in height and the flower comes in dark purple, soft pink or striking white. This picture was taken from my garden and will be looking forward to get some donations from friends of the other two colours.

So lesson to learn? Well what I can think of is, sometimes we have all the required qualities for success (whatever you want your success to be that is), it is how we appreciate what we already have and make the best of it. Make it look important, market it well, and perhaps put some good and strategic finishing to it. Be passionate about anything we do and the creativity will follow.....inshaAllah.

Salam dari Kyoto

Alhamdulillah, dah masuk minggu ke-4 saya di bumi matahari terbit ni. Bunga sakura pun dah luruh hampir kesemuanya.. Bagi yg belum tahu, saya di sini untuk program JENESYS - Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths selama 3 bulan. Senang citer.. wat research collaboration kat sini la..

First time in Japan, actually. Alhamdulillah.. pengalaman yg best2 belaka.. yang adventure pun ada gak.. Minggu pertama saya sakura tengah kembang.. jadi group kami buat 'Ohanami Party' utk menikmati keindahan bunga sakura ni. Bunga sakura sebenarnya hanya kembang 2 minggu dan kemudian akan luruh dan sepanjang tahun tersebut hanya akan berdaun saja. Jadi sebab itulah keindahannya dinantikan dan diraikan.

Macam2 yg kami makan.. tengok saja la atas meja tuh.. Ada sushi, pizza, dango, keropok, air, etc.. Sebenarnya makanan ringan je. Pastu ada dango.. Salah satu manisan tradisional Jepun. Sangat manis! Saya tersalah amik. Terambil satu cucuk ada 3 dango.. Adeh.. jenuh juga nak abiskan!

Hari pertama terus masuk lab.. hari ke-2 dah run simulation. Seronok! Sebab hampir 3 bulan dah tak run calculation. Dan komputernya sangat laju! Super computerla, katakan.. InsyaAllah.. kalau ada rezeki, saya akan tubuhkan satu di UTM. Yela.. bila lagi kita nak mula, kan?

Suhu di sini masih sejuk. Biasanya dari 8 ke 19 darjah celcius. Huhu.. macam winter juga la rasanya. Mungkin sebab itu juga sakura lambat kembang dan lambat luruh. Alhamdulillah.. rezeki saya.

Di hujung minggu, saya berjalan2 di Palace Garden. Dalam taman ni ada istana, tapi istana kecil dan tak dibuka rasanya. Sebab masa saya pergi pintu palace ni ditutup je. Sekali tengok, arkitekturnya sama seperti di korea. Taman ni dibuka untuk orang awam, dan ada banyak pokok sakura. Ramai yang datang berkelah dan ada juga yg mengambil gambar dan melukis. Tengok saja kakak2 yang pakai kimono tu... Excited sungguh dia tengok kawan dia ambil gambar.

Pergerakan saya di sini kebanyakannya ialah dengan basikal. Jadi jimat la juga. 30 minit juga la nak ke institut saya. Dalam hati saya berkata, "Memang saya ni takleh lari dengan merempit, kot". Haha! Okaylah.. sampai lain hari! Doakan saya di sini, ya!
